Suburban Disposal, Inc. has been contracted for garbage and recycling collection.
Please have garbage and recycling out to the curb by 7:00 AM.
All household garbage must be in sealed containers with lids. There is a maximum container size of 45 gallons, with a maximum weight of 40 pounds per can. Do not put garbage out in loose plastic bags. Any spilled garbage is the responsibility of the resident. Garbage will not be picked up if there are recyclables in it.
Plastic bags can NO longer be used for disposal of recyclables. Recycling product must be loose in recycling containers. Please note that CARDBOARD must now be recycled and no longer picked up with household garbage.
Containers for garbage pickup may be no larger than 45 gallons and no heavier than 40 lbs. Containers exceeding the size and weight limit will not be picked up.
Thanks to the residents of Rumson, we have one the highest recycling rates in Monmouth County and the State of New Jersey. This is not only great from a "green" standpoint, but it saves the taxpayers money every year in landfill fees. That's really good news! Recycling may be taken to the drop-off center or picked up at the curb.
Please note that plastic bags may NOT be used for recycling. This applies to both the Recycling Center and to Curbside Recycling.
Please recycle Cardboard but NOT packing materials (plastic, Styrofoam, etc).
Computers / electronics may be recycled on our semi-annual Green Days held the first Saturday of May and October.

The Recycling Center is located behind Rumson Borough Hall at the foot of Avenue of Two Rivers,
next to the municipal boat ramp. The center is CLOSED on the following holidays:
New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
The Recycling Center is for recycling only!!! No trash, bulk, brush, nor hazardous household waste is permitted to be left at the Recycling Center. Violators will be fined.
Curbside Recycling Pickup Schedule
Newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard and commingled recyclables may all be placed at the curb on the same day for curbside pickup. Residents and businesses should have their items at the curb no later than 7:00 AM on their designated days to ensure pickup.

Newspapers and Mixed Paper Magazines, catalogues, office paper, junk mail, etc., may be placed loose in designated containers at the Recycling Center. For curbside pickup, material must be tied or placed in appropriate recycling containers, brown paper bags or cardboard boxes.

Curbside bulk pickups are done by appointment only. You may schedule your pickup in advance by calling 732-842-3300, Mon-Fri, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM. You are allowed two bulk pickups per year, with a limit of 5 cubic yards per pickup. Please schedule your pickup at least one week in advance.
Pickups may be scheduled January through October. There are no bulk pickups in November and December due to the heavy leaf collections schedule.
One additional bulk pickup is allowed when moving in or out of a residence. These pickups are also done on Wednesdays, and are scheduled by calling the above number.
Appliances, computers and TV sets may be included in bulk pickups. No special permit is required. When you book your pickup, please notify us if you are putting out any of these items. Doors must be removed from refrigerators and freezers.
Please place all items at curbside no sooner than one day prior to your scheduled Wednesday pickup date. Any violation will require you to remove the items from the curb. Do NOT bring any bulky debris to the Recycling Center.
Exclusions from Bulk Pickup:
Construction Materials; concrete/asphalt; household hazardous waste; recyclables; propane tanks; fuel containers; pipe with concrete attached.
The Borough does not pick up construction debris. All construction debris, whether by contractor or homeowner must be disposed of at the homeowner’s expense. Note: Building permits require disposal arrangements to be listed with the Building Department.
Leaves are collected curbside from October 15 – December 31. Please make sure they are loose at your curb and free of branches and debris. You may put leaves on the curb only in front of your own property. If you have leaves to be removed outside of the schedule you must do so at your own expense.
Brush is picked up loose at curbside January 1 – October 15. No collection after October 15. Do not bag brush. Please separate brush from any leaves. Brush and limbs only; cut into four (4) foot lengths. No more than 5 cubic yards at one time. No logs, stumps, sod, dirt, or tree contractor debris.

These batteries still contain significant amounts of mercury and should still be recycled. The Monmouth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility (MCHHWF) will accept the small "button batteries" used in watches, calculators and specialty toys and games. Please call the MCHHWF at 732-922-2234 for more information.

Fluorescent Light Tubes AND CFLs:
The Borough cannot collect fluorescent light tubes or compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). You may take CFLs to Home Depot for recycling. Small quantities of unbroken fluorescent tubes may be taken to the MCHHWF (by appointment) for recycling.
Appliances, TV sets and Computers:
Appliances, TV sets and computers may now be recycled as part of a scheduled Wednesday bulk pickup. Please call the Department of Public Works at 732-842-3300 to schedule a bulk pickup. Electronics may also be recycled at our semi-annual Green Days held in May and October.
The Borough does not collect hazardous waste. Residents are solely responsible for the disposal of:
paint; herbicides/pesticides; oil/gas; solvents; auto batteries; chemicals.
How to Dispose of Hazardous Waste
Monmouth County has a permanent Household Hazardous Waste Facility:
Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 11 am - 4 pm
Saturday: 8 am -4 pm
The HHW Facility is closed on Mondays and Thursdays.
If the forecast is calling for an all snow event, the DPW will apply salt brine to the roads 24-to-36 hours before the storm. Salt brine is a highly concentrated mixture of salt and water. This solution will dry to the road preventing the snow from bonding to the roadway.
The Borough applies salt to the roadways when snow/ice begins to adhere to the surface of the road. Once plowing is complete, depending on conditions the DPW may apply salt once again.
Once there is approximately 2-3 inches of snow on the road surface plowing starts. The Borough attempts to clear the road to the curb whenever possible. Once a snow event ends, the road clearing must continue. This process will push snow further to the curb. During this process, it is unfortunate – but unavoidable, that driveways can be blocked by snow.
The residents can assist us in this process by:
Not parking on the roads until plowing is complete.
Not throwing snow that is shoveled / snow-blown into the roadway.
Not plowing their driveways onto the road surface (please pass this information on to your private plowing company).
Removing all basketball hoops.
Keeping all drains clear for melting snow.
When shoveling, pile the majority of the snow to the left of your driveway as you face your house. This helps when the plows come by because there will be less snow to be plowed in front of your driveway.
Residents' mailboxes and supports must be installed and maintained to withstand the rigors of snow removal. DPW staff investigates each complaint. If an inspection shows that the mailbox was hit by the plow equipment a standard mailbox will be installed. If inspections show the mailbox was damaged by the snow coming off the plow, the Borough will NOT be responsible for replacement.
County roads are maintained by the Monmouth County Highway Department, please contact them directly with any issues.
NO WIPES of any kind should be flushed down the drain. (Even if the packaging says they are flushable!)
Do not dump grease down the drain.
Wipes and grease cost taxpayers dollarsto repair clogged pipes, damaged pumps, and resulting problems with the infrastructure.
What should I do if I have a sewer problem?
The Rumson Sewer / Wastewater Department maintains the Borough sanitary sewer system. We can assist and in some cases help you to resolve your sewer problem, but first you need to identify what the problem is. If you suspect the problem isn’t within your plumbing responsibility you should contact the Borough of Rumson. When calling please try and provide as much information as possible. Below is a list of basic questions that can help is help you.
Are your drains running slower the normal or not draining at all?
What part of your house is having the problem (s)?
Is there a discharge of sewage inside or outside your house?
When did the problem start?
Have you ever had the problem before?
If you’re having a sewer related problem Monday – Friday between the hours of 7am – 3:30pm, contact the Rumson Public Works at (732) 842-8941.
If your problem is after 3:30pm, weekend and or holiday, contact the Rumson Police Department at (732) 842-0500.
When calling please provide your name, address, call back number and brief explanation of the problem. A representative from the Sewer Department will respond to inspect the sanitary sewer system in your area and speak with you directly.
Notifying Rumson Sewer Department of the problem may save you from having to pay expensive plumbers fees. If you suspect your having a sewer issue don’t wait to call, delaying or ignoring the problem could lead to discharges of sewage and possible property damage.
